This piece is the result of my "something Christmasy" contest on my facebook fan page. The winner requested a painting of "A child handing a gift to an elderly woman - both standing at the front of a rural church covered in snow". I took a whimsical approach to the idea, something that I felt embodied the Christmas Spirit. I wanted to show more than just a pretty package being exchanged. My goal was to show the way youth give life through innocence, and how giving helps youth fly. I wanted the swirling, windy feel of the country I grew up in because that is home to me. Blue represents the cold beauty of the season, and of humanity's winter. Green and gold are alive, they are Spring and renewal even in the midst of a snowstorm. Gold was also a gift to the Christ child, so the color felt especialIy appropriate. I added red to the child's coat for contrast, but also for passion and life. I didn't see the dualities I caught with repeated pairs til I finished painting, a nice surprise!
