In 1509, when Henry was just nineteen, expenses show that he spent £13.5 million in total on his Christmas food, entertainment, and gifts, with celebrations lasting 12 days. After fasting through Advent, the main highlight of Christmas day was a sumptuous feast, of which the centrepiece was a wild boar’s head, dressed in herbs and fruits with a roasted apple in its mouth.
