Raksha Bandhan ('tie or knot of protection' in Sanskrit) is a Hindu festival celebrating the love and duty between brothers and sisters (also biologically unrelated brother-sister like relationships). The sister ties a Rakhi on her brother's wrist, and says a prayer for her brother for his well being, good health and happiness. She then applies a colorful mark on his forehead. The brother pledges to protect her and take care of her. The rakhi is a thread and can be plain or elaborate. A selection of rakhi designs is featured in this illustration.
